Apex Legends Beginner Guide: What New Players Should Learn First

Apex Legends beginner guide: how a match works, picking a first legend, where to land, shields and healing, fighting as a squad, pings and the ring.

By Published Updated 6 min read

Quick answer

New Apex Legends players improve fastest by learning a few things in order: land away from the drop ship's path, grab armor, a weapon and heals quickly, stay close to your squad, heal and swap shields behind cover, and move early with the ring. Pick one legend and learn their abilities before trying the whole roster.

Key takeaways

  • Learn the basics in order: landing, healing, squad play, the ring, then one legend's abilities.
  • Land somewhere quieter than the drop ship's path. Hot drops teach new players very little.
  • Heal behind cover after every fight, before you loot.
  • Stay close enough to your squad to trade and revive.
  • Start moving as soon as the next ring appears on the map.

This Apex Legends beginner guide covers the few systems that matter first, in the order worth learning them. Apex Legends is a squad battle royale: teams drop onto a map, loot weapons and gear, and fight until one squad is left while a closing ring pushes everyone together. The number of systems overwhelms most new players, but only five of them decide your first hundred matches.

Skill Why learn it first How to practice
Landing and looting Every match starts here Land away from the drop ship's path
Shields and healing Most early deaths are unhealed players Heal behind cover after every fight
Staying with your squad Apex is a team game Follow the jumpmaster, ping everything
Moving with the ring The ring kills players who ignore it Check the map when a new ring appears
One legend's abilities Abilities win fights guns can't Play one legend for a week

How does an Apex Legends match work?

Squads jump from a drop ship, loot weapons, armor and healing from the map, and fight other squads. The ring shrinks in stages and damages anyone outside it, until the last squad standing wins.

The standard mode uses squads of three, and duos is available too. Knocked players can be revived by a teammate. Eliminated players drop a banner; if a teammate collects it and takes it to a respawn beacon, they come back.

Which legend should a beginner play?

Pick one legend whose abilities are easy to use and help your team, then stay with them until those abilities are second nature. Every legend has a tactical ability, a passive and an ultimate, and knowing exactly when yours is ready wins more fights than a stronger pick you don't understand.

For which legends are strong this season, our Apex Legends Season 30 tier list ranks the whole roster. As a beginner, take that as a shortlist, not an order: a B-tier legend you understand beats an S-tier one you don't.

Where should you land?

Somewhere with enough loot for your squad and fewer teams than the areas right under the drop ship's path. Hot drops are exciting, but for a new player they mostly end in an early death with no loot and nothing learned.

A good first habit: follow your jumpmaster, land together and loot fast. Grab armor, a weapon you can control, ammo and some healing, then move. Since the Season 30 loot overhaul made good gear harder to find, swapping from a death box after a fight is worth even more than before.

How do shields and healing work?

Your health bar has two layers: armor (your shield) on top of health. Armor absorbs damage first and is recharged with shield cells and shield batteries. Health is healed with syringes and med kits.

Two habits save lives:

  • Heal behind cover, right after a fight, before looting.
  • Swap armor from a death box when it's faster than healing and the box has a fuller or better shield.

How should you fight as a beginner?

With your squad, from cover, and only when you can finish the fight.

  • Stay within a short distance of your teammates so you can support each other.
  • Shoot from behind cover: peek to fire, then step back.
  • Focus the same enemy as your team. A knock is worth more than damage spread across three players.
  • If a fight is going badly, retreat together instead of one at a time.

The deeper mechanics of gunfights are covered in our Apex Legends fighting fundamentals.

How do you use pings?

Pings let you talk without voice chat: one button marks enemies, loot, destinations and dangers. Ping enemies you see, ping where you want to go, and ping loot your teammates need. It's the easiest way to become a better teammate.

Why does the ring matter so much?

The ring decides where the fighting happens. Players who ignore it end up rotating late through open ground or taking ring damage. When a new ring appears, check the map and start moving before it closes.

Which beginner mistakes should you avoid?

  • Hot-dropping every game before you're comfortable fighting.
  • Looting after a fight before healing.
  • Wandering away from your squad.
  • Switching legends every match.
  • Ignoring the ring until it's already closing on you.

What should you learn after the basics?

Fight selection, rotations and third parties. Those separate players who reach the late game from players who don't. When you're ready for ranked, our Apex Legends ranked guide explains tiers, RP and how to climb, and links to every deeper ranked guide we've written.

FAQ

Is Apex Legends hard for beginners?

It has a learning curve, mostly because of movement, abilities and team play. Learning one legend, staying with your squad and healing behind cover make the early games much easier.

What should a beginner learn first in Apex Legends?

Landing and looting quickly, healing and swapping shields behind cover, staying with the squad and moving early with the ring.

What is the best legend for beginners?

One with simple, useful abilities that you'll play every match until they're automatic. Use the current tier list as a shortlist, then pick the one whose kit you understand.

How do you revive teammates in Apex Legends?

Walk up to a knocked teammate and hold the interact button. Eliminated teammates can be brought back at a respawn beacon once you collect their banner.

Should beginners play ranked Apex?

Once the basics feel natural. Ranked rewards survival and placement, so the habits in this guide matter even more there, and every match costs RP to enter above the Rookie tier.
