Rotate in Warzone when you can still choose where you end up, not when the gas makes the choice for you. Open the map as soon as the next circle shows, pick one building or ridge with cover inside it (not just "inside the zone"), and move there along cover while the lobby is busy fighting. Leave early if the next circle is far or your spot is likely to be taken; wait at the edge only when you have cover, plates and a clear path in.

Rotate early, mid or late?
| When you move | Pick it when | The risk |
|---|---|---|
| Early (as soon as the circle shows) | The next circle is far away, you want a specific building, or you're low on armor and want to avoid fights | Teams already inside can contest you, and you know less about where the next circle will land |
| Mid (halfway through the collapse) | You're near the edge with cover and want to see which way the lobby moves first | The best buildings near the centre may already be taken |
| Late (with the gas behind you) | You're hunting teams that rotate in behind you, and you have a gas mask and plates | Blocked routes, gas damage and nowhere to go if a team holds the edge |
In most lobbies, mid is the safest default. Early is right when you're far from the circle; late is a specialist play, not a habit.
Read the circle in five seconds
Every time the next circle appears, check three things on the tactical map:
- How far is it? If you'd have to cross most of the map, leave now and take a vehicle.
- What's at the centre? A cluster of tall buildings means the endgame will be about rooftops and stairwells. Open fields mean ridges, rocks and smoke.
- Where's the strong side? The side of the circle with buildings and high ground is where teams will fight to hold. The open side is where they'll rotate through and get shot.
Position beats distance. A circle that's close but drops your team into an open valley is worse than one that's further away but has a building you can hold.
Pick a destination, not a direction
"Go in the zone" isn't a plan. "The two-storey house on the ridge north of the gas station" is. Ping it on the map before you move so the whole squad runs to the same place.
A good spot has four things: hard cover on the side facing the next rotation, a view of where teams will come from, a second exit, and room inside the following circle. If the place you want is already taken, pick the next-best spot near it rather than fighting the team inside on their terms.
Move along cover, not in a straight line
The straight path between you and the circle is usually open ground that every team on the edge can see. Hug buildings, ridgelines and tree lines even if it takes longer. Cross open areas in one go with a smoke down, not by walking out and stopping halfway to plate.
Chokepoints cut both ways. A single bridge, a narrow pass between hills or the only road into a town is where teams wait for you. If your route runs through one, cross early before anyone sets up on it, or pick a different route. If you get there first, holding the far side of it is one of the strongest positions on the map.
Read the lobby before you move
- Gunfire tells you where teams are. Heavy fighting on your route means two weakened teams; quiet means nobody, or a team waiting. Both change your path.
- Use your recon. A UAV or a Heartbeat Sensor before a rotation is worth more than the same item mid-fight, because it tells you which route is empty.
- Stop looting on time. Once your squad has plates, a full armor vest, a gas mask and enough cash for a buyback, looting one more building is how you end up rotating late.
- Vehicles are fast and loud. Use one for long rotations early in the match. In the last few circles, an engine tells every team where you are; leave the car well before your destination and walk in.
Rotating as a squad
The squad that splits during a rotation loses its fights one player at a time. Move so every teammate can shoot at whatever shoots the lead. When you reach a team in your path, you have three options:
- Go around when there's a covered route and time on the clock.
- Wait when the gas isn't pushing you and they're likely to fight someone else.
- Fight when they're already in a fight, or when they're the only thing between you and your spot with the gas behind you.
Fighting a team just because you can see them is the most common way to lose a good position.
Solo players have it harder: you can't hold a building alone against a squad. Play the edges, move with the gas closer than a squad would, and let teams in the middle fight each other before you go in.
The endgame
The last three circles are decided by where you already are when they start. Before the third-last circle, make sure your team has:
- A spot with cover on at least two sides.
- Enough plates to re-plate fully twice.
- A gas mask on every player.
- At least one smoke and one piece of recon left.
In the final circle, timing matters more than kills. Move into the last safe area while the other teams are fighting each other, not after. A team that rotates last into the final circle usually has to fight two squads at once from the open. Our Nuke and Champion's Quest guide shows how long a winning streak needs this kind of endgame play.
Seven rotation mistakes
- Moving only when the gas arrives. By then every good spot is taken.
- Taking the shortest route. Shortest usually means most open.
- Fighting every team you see. Each fight costs plates and time.
- Looting too long. Set a loot list and leave when it's done.
- Ignoring the next circle. The best spot now may be outside the following one.
- Arriving with no plan for the endgame. Know where you'll be for the last three circles.
- Splitting up. Two players in one building and one in another lose both.
How to get better at rotations
Pick one focus per match for five matches: the circle (check the map at every new circle), the route (always along cover), the destination (always one named spot), the timing (leave at the halfway point of the collapse), then review. After each death, ask whether you died where you meant to be. If not, the rotation was the problem, not the gunfight.
Resurgence moves faster but the same rules apply; see our Warzone Resurgence guide. If you're grinding Ranked and want the SR now, a Warzone rank boost is played by hand on your account.
FAQ
When should I rotate in Warzone?
As soon as the next circle shows if it's far away or you want a specific building; halfway through the collapse in most other cases. Don't wait for the gas to push you.
Should I rotate early or late in Warzone?
Early when the circle is far or you want strong ground, mid as a default, late only when you have a gas mask, plates and a plan to hunt teams rotating behind you.
Is playing the edge of the circle good in Warzone?
It can be, if the edge has cover and a clear path in. The danger is getting stuck between the gas and a team holding the buildings inside.
Should I fight enemies during a rotation?
Only when they're already fighting someone else or they block the only path to your spot. Otherwise go around or wait.
What makes a good Warzone endgame position?
Cover on at least two sides, a view of where teams will rotate from, a second exit, and room inside the next circle.
