MW4 Prestige Explained: Classic vs Regular, Rewards and Prestige Master

How Prestige works in MW4: Classic vs Regular, what resets, the Permanent Unlock Token, every reward, Prestige Master to Level 1,000 and weapon Prestige.

By Published 6 min read

Quick answer

In Modern Warfare 4 you reach Level 55, then choose a Prestige path. Classic Prestige resets your level unlocks in exchange for a 20% XP boost, a Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetics. Regular Prestige restarts you at Level 1 but keeps every unlock, with no XP boost. There are 10 Prestige levels, then Prestige Master runs to Level 1,000.

How Prestige works in Modern Warfare 4

In Modern Warfare 4 you level from 1 to 55, then pick one of two Prestige paths: Classic, which resets your unlocks for a 20% XP boost and a Permanent Unlock Token, or Regular, which keeps everything and simply restarts the level count. You choose again each time you Prestige, so you can switch paths between Prestige levels. Here is how the whole ladder fits together in this year's Call of Duty.

The ladder, from Infinity Ward's launch progression post (19 October 2026):

Stage Levels What it is
Military rank 1 to 55 Private I to Commander. Weapons, perks, equipment and killstreaks unlock as you level
Prestige 1 to 10 1 to 55, ten times Each Prestige restarts your level and adds a new set of rewards
Prestige Master 56 to 1,000 After Prestige 10, your level keeps climbing past 55
Prestige Legend 1,000 The top of the ladder

Activision hasn't said whether Prestige carries over between seasons or whether Season 1 changes the cap, and it hasn't announced a Season 1 date. If you see a date quoted for Season 1, it is an estimate.

Classic vs Regular Prestige

Classic Prestige Regular Prestige
Level Back to 1 Back to 1
Level unlocks and Create-a-Class Reset, so you unlock them again as you level Kept
XP boost 20% None
Permanent Unlock Token One per Prestige None
Rewards Classic versions of the Prestige rewards, plus bonus cosmetics Regular versions of the Prestige rewards

The choice comes down to how you play:

  • Pick Classic if you want the fastest climb and like the old-school grind. The 20% XP boost speeds up the next 55 levels, and the Permanent Unlock Token lets you keep one item for good.
  • Pick Regular if you play every night with a settled loadout. Your classes stay exactly as they are, so your next match plays the same as your last one.

If you are halfway through a weapon's camo grind, Regular is the safer pick: losing access to a weapon until you level back to it stalls the challenges.

The Permanent Unlock Token

Each Classic Prestige gives one Permanent Unlock Token. Spend it on a level-unlock item and that item stays unlocked through every later Classic Prestige.

Infinity Ward's own advice is to spend tokens on perks, field upgrades, killstreaks and equipment before weapons. Weapons can be picked up in other ways during a match, but a missing perk or killstreak changes every class you build. A practical order for most players:

  1. The perk you put in every class.
  2. Your main killstreak.
  3. Your favourite lethal or tactical equipment.
  4. A field upgrade.
  5. Only then a weapon.

Prestige rewards

Every Prestige level has its own rewards, with separate Regular and Classic versions of the top reward. Prestige 1 sets the pattern:

Level in Prestige 1 Reward
On entering Sandstorm operator skin
10 Call of Duty (2003) loading screen
20 Prestige 1 emblem
30 Engage! weapon charm
40 Men of Service large decal
50 The Vet (Regular) or The Vet Prime (Classic) Mosin-Nagant blueprint

Prestige 2 to 10 follow the same shape, with a weapon blueprint or operator skin at Level 50 in Regular and Classic versions. Prestige 10 ends with Sang 9mm blueprints.

Prestige Master adds the Paragon operator skin on entry, the Best of the Best loading screen at Level 60, a HAN 86 blueprint at Level 90, plus emblems, weapon charms, level colours and legacy Prestige icons on the way to Level 1,000.

Weapon Prestige

Weapons have their own Prestige. Once a weapon hits its max level you can Prestige it:

  • It resets the weapon's level to 1 and relocks its attachments, except Apex attachments and attachments from weapon blueprints.
  • It keeps your customisation: blueprints, camos and reticles stay.

Weapon Prestige is also where the Pyroclast camos live, according to Infinity Ward's progression post:

Camo How you get it
Pyroclast Weapon Prestige 1, Level 1
Pyroclast Terminus Max level in Weapon Prestige 1
Pyroclast Scatter Weapon Level 150 in weapon Prestige Master
Pyroclast Cascade Weapon Level 250 in weapon Prestige Master

Those sit outside the mode mastery camos. The MW4 camos guide covers the full camo track for Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone.

How to earn XP faster

Infinity Ward says XP comes from playing matches, eliminations, playing the objective and completing challenges. A few things make the biggest difference right now:

  • Do your Daily Challenges. They pay XP on top of match XP, and you can reroll one a day. Swap out any challenge that needs a weapon or mode you don't play.
  • Play the objective. Captures, defuses and holding points pay XP that kills alone don't.
  • Search and Destroy and Collateral pay more per kill since 25 October. A kill in those modes now gives 300 XP, up from 100, and Infinity Ward says more XP changes are coming.
  • Classic Prestige stacks the 20% boost. If speed matters more to you than keeping your loadouts, Classic gets you to the next Prestige sooner.
  • DMZ has its own level. DMZ XP counts toward your 1 to 55 level, but Multiplayer and Warzone XP doesn't count toward your DMZ level, which runs to 70 on its own track.

One launch-week rule to know: you can't Prestige your player level or a weapon while you're searching for a match. Back out of the queue first.

Should you Prestige?

Prestige whenever you want the next set of rewards. Nothing you earn is lost, and Regular Prestige costs you nothing but the level number. The only real decision is the path:

  • You want speed and the Classic-only rewards: Classic, and spend each token on a perk or killstreak.
  • You care about your loadouts and camo progress: Regular.

If the climb from Level 1 to Prestige 10 or Prestige Master is more hours than you have, BoostingXP's MW4 prestige boost levels your account from your current rank to the Prestige you choose, played by hand. The Call of Duty page lists camo, Dark Ops and DMZ services too. For launch-day times, editions and what each mode includes, the Modern Warfare 4 launch guide has the details.

FAQ

What is the max level in MW4?

Level 55 before Prestige. After Prestige 10, Prestige Master runs to Level 1,000, called Prestige Legend.

How many Prestiges are in MW4?

Ten Prestige levels, followed by Prestige Master.

What is the difference between Classic and Regular Prestige in MW4?

Classic resets your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress but gives a 20% XP boost, a Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetics. Regular keeps all your unlocks and gives no XP boost.

What should I use the Permanent Unlock Token on?

Infinity Ward recommends perks, field upgrades, killstreaks and equipment before weapons.

Does weapon Prestige remove my camos?

No. Weapon Prestige resets the weapon's level and most attachments, but your blueprints, camos and reticles stay.

Does DMZ XP count toward my Prestige?

Yes. DMZ XP counts toward your 1 to 55 level. It doesn't work the other way: Multiplayer and Warzone XP doesn't raise your DMZ level.
