- In Role Queue you place and climb separately as tank, damage and support.
- Most deaths come from standing where three or more enemies can see you.
- Spend a cooldown when it wins something: a kill, a save, or space.
- When your team is down two players and the enemy isn't, the fight is lost. Regroup.
This Overwatch 2 ranked guide is about the decisions that matter whichever hero you pick. In Role Queue, Overwatch 2 is a 5v5 game with one tank, two damage heroes and two supports per team. Games are won by winning team fights, and team fights go to the side that positions better, trades cooldowns better and stacks ultimates better. Hero choice matters too, and our guide to the best Overwatch heroes to climb ranked covers it.
| Team-fight element | What wins | What loses |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | Cover and angles your role can hold | Standing where three enemies can see you |
| Cooldowns | Using them to win a trade | Using them as soon as they're up |
| Ultimates | Combining with your team's | Using one alone into five enemies |
| Target focus | Everyone on the same target | Spread damage on the tank |
| Regrouping | Waiting to fight together | Trickling in one at a time |
How do Competitive ranks work in Overwatch 2?
You gain rank progress for wins and lose it for losses. The tiers run Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master and Grandmaster, and each tier has five divisions, from 5 (lowest) to 1 (highest). Champion sits above Grandmaster as the top tier, and the Top 500 leaderboard ranks the best players in each region.
In Role Queue you have a separate rank for each role, with placement matches for each. That means a Diamond support can be a Gold tank, and that's normal.
How should each role position?
Position so you can do your job without being exposed to the whole enemy team.
- Tank: take space with cover nearby, and back off to it before your resources run out. Your team plays off your position.
- Damage: find off-angles that pressure the enemy from a different direction than your tank, with a way back to cover.
- Support: stand where you can see your team and they can protect you, with cover between you and the enemy's damage heroes.
The most common positioning mistake at every rank is standing where more than two enemies can shoot you at once.
How do you trade cooldowns?
Use a key cooldown when it wins something: a kill, a saved teammate, or space. Burning it because it's available leaves you without it when the real fight starts.
- Watch the enemy's key cooldowns, and push right after they've been spent.
- Hold your defensive cooldowns for the moment they save you, not the first hit you take.
How does ultimate economy work?
Ultimates charge over the fight, and team fights often go to the team that uses them together. Track roughly when your team's ultimates are ready, combine them, and try to bait out the enemy's first.
- Don't use an ultimate on a fight that's already won or already lost.
- Call your ultimate status so the team can plan around it.
When is a fight lost?
When your team has lost two or more players and the enemy hasn't, the fight is usually gone. Regroup with the survivors instead of taking the next fight alone. Trickling in one at a time turns one lost fight into three.
Which mistakes lose ranked games?
- Trickling into a fight that's already lost.
- Damage heroes standing behind their tank, shooting the same barrier.
- Supports healing from the open.
- Using ultimates alone into a full team.
- Swapping heroes every death instead of fixing positioning.
How do you climb faster?
- Focus on one role at a time; each has its own rank.
- Review one lost fight per loss: what went wrong, and who died first.
- Warm up before you queue, and stop after two losses in a row.
