Overwatch 2 Stadium Guide: Rounds, Powers, Items and Ranks

An Overwatch 2 Stadium guide: how the best-of-7 format works, when to pick Powers, how to spend Stadium Cash on items and how the Stadium ranks climb.

Published 5 min read

Quick answer

Stadium is Overwatch 2's round-based mode. Ranked Stadium matches are best of 7, you lock one hero for the whole game, and you build them as you go: a new Power before rounds 1, 3, 5 and 7, and up to six Items bought with Stadium Cash earned in the match. Quick Play Stadium is a shorter best of 5. Ranked Stadium has its own ranks, from Rookie up to Legend, separate from Competitive.

What is Stadium in Overwatch 2?

Stadium is a round-based mode that arrived in Overwatch 2 in 2025. Instead of one long match, you play a best-of-7 series of short rounds across different maps and modes, and you build your hero up between rounds. It plays more like a strategy game than standard Overwatch: what you buy and when matters as much as how you aim.

Three things set it apart:

  • One hero for the whole match. You lock your pick at the start and can't swap, so your choice and your build have to carry you.
  • You upgrade as you go. Powers and Items change how your hero plays from round to round.
  • Third-person by default. Stadium starts you in third-person, but you can switch to first-person if you prefer.

How do rounds work?

A match is first to four round wins. Before each round you have a short time in the Armory, the shop screen, to equip Powers and buy Items while you plan with your team. Then you play the round, earn Stadium Cash, and come back to the Armory to build further.

Because the series is long, an early lost round isn't fatal. Teams that adjust their builds after losing a round often take the series.

What are Powers and when do you get them?

Powers are free, hero-specific upgrades that change how an ability works. Each hero has a set of Powers to choose from, and you pick a new one before rounds 1, 3, 5 and 7 in Ranked (Quick Play's shorter matches give one before rounds 1, 2, 3 and 5).

How to choose:

  • Pick a direction early. Many Powers work best together. Decide whether your build is about damage, survival or a specific ability, and keep choosing Powers that support it.
  • Read the match. If the enemy keeps diving your backline, a defensive Power can be worth more than a damage one.
  • Don't change direction every round. A build that half-commits to three ideas is weaker than one that fully commits to one.

How do Items and Stadium Cash work?

Items are bought with Stadium Cash, the currency you earn during the match. You earn it from damage, healing, eliminations and assists, plus a payout at the end of every round. When a team falls behind, bounties can appear on the opponents who are the biggest threat, giving extra cash for taking them down.

You can hold up to six Items at once, and you can sell an Item back to make room for a better one. Items fall into three broad categories, Weapon, Ability and Survival, so you can lean into whatever your build needs. You can also buy one Gadget, an active item that gives you an extra ability on its own cooldown.

Spending well:

  • Buy for your build, not for value. An expensive Item that doesn't fit your Powers is wasted cash.
  • Don't hoard. Unspent cash doesn't win rounds. Buy upgrades as soon as they help.
  • Survival is underrated. A hero that stays alive keeps earning cash; one that dies early falls behind.

How do Stadium ranks work?

Stadium has its own ranked ladder, separate from Competitive. The leagues run Rookie, Novice, Contender, Elite, Pro, All-Star and Legend, each split into five divisions, and you have a separate Stadium rank for Tank, Damage and Support. Ranks only come from Ranked Stadium, not Quick Play. Your Competitive rank doesn't affect your Stadium rank, and the other way round.

Blizzard has changed details such as how Stadium ranks reset between seasons, and what rewards each rank unlocks, so check the in-game Stadium screen for the current season's rules.

How do you climb in Stadium?

  1. Master one or two heroes. Because you can't swap mid-match, depth on a few heroes beats breadth across many.
  2. Plan your build before the match. Know which Powers and Items you're aiming for so the short Armory time isn't spent reading.
  3. Talk to your team in the Armory. A team that builds to cover each other's weaknesses beats five separate plans.
  4. Adapt after losses. If a round goes badly, look at what killed you and buy or pick to answer it.
  5. Stay alive to stay rich. Deaths cost you rounds, and every second dead is cash you're not earning. A careful round that ends with you alive often sets up the next win.

Which mistakes cost the most?

  • Picking a hero you don't know well. You're stuck with it for up to seven rounds.
  • Scattered builds. Powers and Items that don't support each other.
  • Ignoring the enemy's build. If they're stacking healing or burst, your purchases should answer it.
  • Tilting after round one. A best-of-7 rewards staying calm.

For the standard Competitive ladder, our Overwatch 2 ranked guide covers positioning, cooldowns and ultimate economy.
