Checked against Activision's Modern Warfare 4 blog posts on 18 October 2026, five days before launch. Activision has not published the camo challenges yet; this guide marks what is official and what is reported, and will be updated when the in-game requirements are known.
How many mastery camos does MW4 have?
Modern Warfare 4 has nine mastery camos: three for Multiplayer, three for DMZ and three for Warzone. Activision's Multiplayer deep dive from August 21 puts it plainly: there are "three Mastery Camos to earn in each mode for nine total."
The names below come from the mastery camo showcases Call of Duty posted on its official channels, and every major outlet lists them identically. Activision's blog shows the camos in video but doesn't print the names or an unlock order, so the order here is the order they were shown in.
| Mode | First mastery camo | Second | Final | When you can start |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Multiplayer | Mercurial Drift | Polyatomic Reforged | Orion Reforged | Launch, October 23 |
| DMZ | Chiral | Ripple Tide | Helio | DMZ Early Access, October 20 |
| Warzone | Parallax | Damascus Reforged | Empyros | When MW4 weapons reach Warzone in Season 1 |
On top of the nine, Activision's deep dive also carries a "Prestige Mastery Camo Showcase" video, so there is a fourth set tied to Prestige. The reported names are Pyroclast, Pyroclast Verge and Pyroclast Scatter, with some sources adding a fourth, Pyroclast Cascade. That is why you will see MW4 camo lists claiming 9, 12 or 13 mastery camos: they are counting the same nine mode camos plus three or four Prestige camos. Our Call of Duty boosting hub has a camo service for each of the three modes.
What Activision has confirmed, and what it hasn't
A lot of what is published about MW4 camos this week mixes confirmed facts with guesses. Here is the split as of October 18:
| Claim | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Three mastery camos per mode, nine in total | Official | Activision MP deep dive, Aug 21 |
| One Camo Track per weapon, progressed across all three modes | Official | Activision MP deep dive, Aug 21 |
| Weapon progression (levels and attachments) is global across Multiplayer and DMZ | Official | Activision DMZ deep dive, Oct 16 |
| 33 weapons at launch: 24 primaries, 8 secondaries, 1 melee | Official | Activision MP deep dive |
| A Prestige mastery camo set exists | Official (showcase video) | Activision MP deep dive |
| The nine mode camo names | Reported, consistent everywhere | Call of Duty showcase videos and social posts |
| Prestige camo names and count (3 or 4) | Reported, sources disagree | Showcase clip, press |
| Unlock order within each mode | Likely, not confirmed | Showcase order |
| Base camo count per weapon (eight military camos has been reported) | Not confirmed | Early-build footage |
| Kill counts, headshots or other challenge numbers | Not published | None |
| Warzone date for MW4 weapons and camos | Season 1, no date on Activision's blog | Activision Warzone post, Sep 24 |
If a page gives you exact kill counts for Orion Reforged before launch, it is guessing. Treat any requirement numbers you see this week the same way, including on store pages.
How the MW4 camo grind works
The one sentence that matters comes straight from Activision: "Progress each weapon's Camo Track across all three experiences to unlock its Mastery Camo Challenges."
Read that carefully, because it changes how you should plan the grind compared with Black Ops 7.
- Each weapon has one Camo Track, not three. Kills and challenges on the M4 in Multiplayer, in DMZ and, from Season 1, in Warzone all push the same track forward.
- The mastery camos are per mode. Finishing the track opens that weapon's Mastery Camo Challenges, and there are three mastery camos for each mode. Mercurial Drift is a Multiplayer camo, Chiral a DMZ camo, Parallax a Warzone camo.
- Weapon levels follow you too. Activision's DMZ deep dive calls weapon progression "a global system, so any Progression you achieve across Multiplayer and DMZ is counted." Shared attachments unlock once, and a duplicate unlock turns into a Bonus Level Up instead of being wasted.
The practical result: you grind each weapon's base track once, in whichever mode suits that weapon, and only then split your time by mode for the mastery camos you actually want. What Activision hasn't spelled out is whether a mastery challenge for one mode can be completed in another. The safe assumption, and the way every previous mode-specific camo set has worked, is that Multiplayer mastery is earned in Multiplayer, DMZ mastery in DMZ and Warzone mastery in Warzone.
How mastery camos probably unlock
The names give away where Infinity Ward is drawing from. Polyatomic and Orion were the top two Multiplayer camos in Modern Warfare II (2022), and Damascus was the top camo in Modern Warfare (2019). In Modern Warfare II the ladder went like this: Gold on one weapon after its base challenges, Platinum after Gold on every weapon in that class, Polyatomic after Platinum on 51 weapons, then Orion after Polyatomic on 51 weapons.
MW4 has three steps per mode instead of four, so the most likely shape is:
- First camo (Mercurial Drift, Chiral, Parallax): earned on a single weapon, after its Camo Track and a mastery challenge on that weapon.
- Second camo (Polyatomic Reforged, Ripple Tide, Damascus Reforged): after the first camo on every weapon in a class, or on a set number of weapons.
- Final camo (Orion Reforged, Helio, Empyros): after the second camo on the whole launch arsenal, or a weapon count matching it.
That is a pattern, not a confirmed rule. The difference between "every weapon in a class" and "a number of weapons" matters a lot for planning, and nobody outside Infinity Ward knows which one MW4 uses until the game is out.
The scale of the grind: weapons by class
The final camos are where the hours go. If MW4 follows its predecessors and ties them to the full launch arsenal, that is 33 weapons. Activision named 22 of them during the Open Beta; the other 11 are revealed in-game at launch.
| Class | Weapons named so far | Notes for the camo grind |
|---|---|---|
| Assault Rifles | M4, Han 86, Hyeon Burst, Kastov 762, Patriot XMR, Axion | The easiest class to grind in any mode. Burst weapons are slower for multi-kill challenges. |
| SMGs | ISO Nightshade, PPSh-41, X-58 NYX, Wz. 55 Striga | Fastest in Multiplayer on small maps. |
| Shotguns | Rezi 12 | Range-limited, so Multiplayer is the natural home. |
| LMGs | FiNN LMG, Type 73 | Slow handling; objective modes help. |
| Marksman Rifles | MAR-9, Oris 8.6 | Better suited to longer sightlines, so Warzone and DMZ fit them. |
| Sniper Rifles | KG-7 Vulcan, Signal 50 | Long-range and headshot-style challenges suit Warzone and DMZ more than Multiplayer. |
| Pistols | Krait P68, .50 GS, Sang 9mm | Quick in Multiplayer once you run them as your main weapon. |
| Launchers | PILA | Historically the slowest class: kills depend on what is on the map to shoot at. |
| Melee | Combat Knife | Multiplayer only makes sense here. |
Watch the small classes. If the second camo is earned per class, a one-weapon class like Shotguns or Launchers finishes it as soon as that weapon has its first camo, which sounds easy until the one weapon is a launcher. In past mastery grinds, launcher and melee challenges were the ones that held players back from the final camo for weeks. Look at them early, not last.
The 22 names come from BoostingXP's Open Beta weapon notes, which also cover how each one handled in the beta. Launch balancing will shift some of that.
Which mode to grind first
Because the Camo Track is shared, the first question is not "which camo do I want" but "where does this weapon level fastest". Each mode has a clear strength.
Multiplayer has the highest kill density: 6v6 on 12 core maps at launch, instant respawns and no gear to lose. For SMGs, shotguns, assault rifles, pistols and melee, it is the fastest place to finish a Camo Track, and it opens on launch day with no early access.
DMZ opens first, on October 20 for digital pre-orders, and Infinity Ward said in its DMZ Q&A on Reddit that the camo grind is available from the start of DMZ Early Access. That gives you three days of camo progress before Multiplayer exists. The catch is that DMZ is an extraction mode: you can only use a weapon you bring in from your Stash or find in the exclusion zone, and you can lose it. According to the same Q&A, a Weapon Manual that lets you buy a weapon in DMZ does not unlock that weapon in Multiplayer or Warzone, and the reverse is also true. Levels and camo progress carry over; the right to use the weapon does not.
Warzone is not part of the MW4 grind yet. MW4 weapons and progression come to Warzone with Season 1, which Activision's blog has not dated; a roadmap image posted on Call of Duty's social channels points to November 6. Until then there is nothing to grind there for MW4, and Warzone's own mastery camos (Parallax, Damascus Reforged, Empyros) can't start.
A sensible order for most players:
- October 20 to 22: play DMZ Early Access with the weapons you plan to use most. It pushes their levels and Camo Tracks before launch, and the weapon levels you earn there count in Multiplayer.
- Launch week: move to Multiplayer for the close-range classes and the base tracks of the weapons you didn't touch in DMZ. Read the actual challenge text in the Gunsmith on day one before you commit to a plan.
- Season 1: when MW4 weapons land in Warzone, use it for marksman rifles, snipers and anything with long-range challenges, and start the Warzone mastery set on weapons whose tracks are already done.
Camos that are already unlocked at launch
Not everything needs a grind. Two camos from the pre-order offer are unlocked straight away on MW4 weapons.
- Moonlit Pearl, a Universal camo from the digital pre-order's Gilded Pearl Camo Pack. It was usable in Black Ops 7 immediately, and on October 23 it unlocks on every MW4 weapon.
- Gilded Ruin, earned in Black Ops 7 by getting 5,000 Skulls. Activision says "the first 100,000 players that complete the Challenge will receive a special version of the Camo", the serialized version. It also unlocks instantly on MW4 weapons at launch.
What does not come with you: your Black Ops 7 weapon camos. Activision had to correct its own September post on this. Operators, operator skins and weapon blueprints from Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 stay usable in Warzone, but legacy weapon camos do not. Camo progress from the MW4 beta was also reset; only the cosmetic beta rewards carry over.
Prestige camos
The Pyroclast set is tied to Prestige, not to the Camo Track, so you earn it by levelling your account rather than by finishing weapon challenges. Activision has not said which Prestige milestones unlock each one.
That links the camo grind to the bigger choice MW4 gives you each time you prestige. Regular Prestige sends you back to Level 1 but keeps your Create-a-Class unlocks; Classic Prestige is the full reset of level unlocks and class progression in exchange for faster XP. Activision hasn't said how Classic Prestige treats camo progress. Until it does, finish any mastery challenge you are close to before you pick Classic. The MW4 launch guide explains both Prestige routes in more detail.
Common mistakes in the first weeks
- Following requirement numbers from a pre-launch guide. No one has them yet. Open the Gunsmith on October 23, write down the real challenges for your first few weapons, and build the plan from those.
- Saving launchers and one-weapon classes for last. In every recent mastery grind these are what stopped players from finishing. Get a look at their challenges early.
- Treating DMZ like Multiplayer. Your weapon can be lost on a failed extraction. Grind DMZ with weapons you can replace, and keep the ones you need for a specific challenge for runs where you can play safe.
- Grinding Warzone before Season 1. Until MW4 weapons arrive there, Warzone time doesn't touch the MW4 Camo Track.
- Levelling a weapon twice. Weapon levels and the Camo Track are shared. If a weapon is maxed from DMZ, start its Multiplayer mastery challenges, not its base track again.
- Assuming post-launch weapons will cover for a skipped one. Activision hasn't said whether weapons added after launch count toward the final camos, so don't skip a launch weapon expecting a future one to replace it.
If you'd rather skip the grind
A full set of final camos across 33 weapons is one of the longest grinds in Call of Duty, and doing it in three modes multiplies it. BoostingXP's MW4 camo boost covers the Multiplayer mastery set on the weapons you choose, played by hand by experienced players, with self-play available if you'd rather queue together. The DMZ and Warzone camo boosts cover those modes' mastery sets, and the Warzone one starts once MW4 weapons reach Warzone in Season 1. Because Activision hasn't published the requirements yet, the booster confirms what your account still needs before starting.
FAQ
How many mastery camos are in MW4?
Nine across the three modes: three in Multiplayer, three in DMZ and three in Warzone. A separate Prestige set of three or four Pyroclast camos is why some lists say 12 or 13.
Does MW4 camo progress carry over between Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone?
Yes for the base track. Activision says you "progress each weapon's Camo Track across all three experiences", and weapon levels are global. The mastery camos themselves are separate for each mode.
What is the best camo in MW4 Multiplayer?
Orion Reforged is the final Multiplayer mastery camo, after Mercurial Drift and Polyatomic Reforged. Its exact requirements haven't been published.
What are the MW4 camo challenges?
Activision has not published them. The requirements appear in the Gunsmith when the game launches on October 23, 2026, and any numbers you see before then are estimates.
When can I grind Warzone camos in MW4?
From Season 1, when MW4 weapons and progression come to Warzone. Activision's blog gives no date; a roadmap image on Call of Duty's social channels points to November 6, 2026.
Do Black Ops 7 camos carry over to MW4?
No. Legacy weapon camos don't carry over, even in Warzone. The pre-order camos Moonlit Pearl and Gilded Ruin are the exception: both unlock on MW4 weapons at launch.
