Dota 2 MMR and Medals Explained: Every Rank, Rank Confidence and How to Climb

Dota 2 MMR and medals explained: every rank from Herald to Immortal, the MMR behind each star, how Rank Confidence works and what actually moves your rating.

Published 7 min read

Quick answer

Dota 2 rates every ranked player with one hidden number, MMR, and shows it as a medal. Herald to Ancient stars are about 154 MMR wide, Divine stars about 200, and Immortal starts after Divine 5, around 5,420 to 5,620 MMR. Since patch 7.33, gains and losses vary with your Rank Confidence instead of a flat 25, and a settled account usually moves about 25 to 30 per game.

How Dota 2 ranking works

Every ranked Dota 2 account has a matchmaking rating, MMR. It is a single number that rises when you win ranked games and falls when you lose them, and the matchmaker uses it to find you teammates and opponents of a similar level. You see it in two places: as a medal on your profile, and as a number in your ranked match history.

Dota 2 used to keep separate Core and Support ratings. That split is gone: each account now has one MMR, whatever position you play. Patch 7.33 in April 2023 also rebuilt how that number moves. Valve described the new rating as two values working together, your Rank and your Rank Confidence, and most of what confuses players about MMR today comes from the second one.

Valve doesn't publish an official table of which MMR matches which medal. The ranges below are the ones the community has tracked consistently for years and the ones BoostingXP's own calculator uses. Treat them as a reliable guide rather than a guarantee: it is normal for a medal to sit a little ahead of or behind the number.

Every Dota 2 medal and its MMR

There are eight medals. The first seven each have five stars; Immortal has no stars and shows a leaderboard position instead.

Medal Stars Approximate MMR Width of each star
Herald 1 to 5 0 to 769 about 154
Guardian 1 to 5 770 to 1,539 about 154
Crusader 1 to 5 1,540 to 2,309 about 154
Archon 1 to 5 2,310 to 3,079 about 154
Legend 1 to 5 3,080 to 3,849 about 154
Ancient 1 to 5 3,850 to 4,619 about 154
Divine 1 to 5 4,620 and up about 200
Immortal none from about 5,420 to 5,620 leaderboard rank instead

Where Immortal begins is the one number sources disagree on. Divine 5 starts around 5,420, and community tables put the Immortal line either there or one Divine star higher, at about 5,620. BoostingXP's calculator uses 5,620, the safer of the two.

Two numbers at the top end are official. Since a March 2025 update, games where any player is above 8,500 MMR use Immortal Draft, where two captains draft the other eight players, and players above that level must register an official name to queue ranked. A later patch capped ratings at 9,500 MMR, so Immortal no longer stretches to the five-figure numbers it once did.

Where most players sit

Rank distribution data from public match trackers in 2025 and 2026 tells the same story: the middle of the ladder is Crusader and Archon, and the top two medals are a small group.

  • The average account sits around Crusader 5 to Archon 1.
  • Roughly one player in five is Archon.
  • Divine and Immortal together are under one in ten players, and Immortal alone is about 4%.

So reaching Legend already puts you in the upper half of the ladder, and Ancient puts you in about the top fifth.

Rank Confidence: why your gains change

Rank Confidence is how sure the game is that your MMR is accurate. It shows as a percentage next to your rating in your match history, and it changes how fast you move.

  • Low confidence means big swings. A new or recalibrating account moves a lot per game, because the system is still finding its level. There is no longer a fixed number of calibration matches; you stop swinging as confidence builds.
  • High confidence means steady steps. Once the game is sure of you, each ranked game moves you a moderate, capped amount. On a settled account that is usually around 25 to 30 MMR per game. Players report that in 2026 wins are often worth a little more than losses at lower ranks.
  • Your medal appears once confidence is high enough. A brand-new account plays a few ranked games before it shows a medal at all.
  • Confidence drops if you stop playing. Taking months off lowers your confidence rather than your MMR, so your first games back move more than usual in either direction. Medals don't decay from inactivity.

There is no win-streak bonus. Ten wins move you the same amount whether they come in a row or spread across a week, so there is no reason to keep queuing to protect a streak.

How much MMR to climb a medal

With a settled account, the arithmetic is simple. One star from Herald to Ancient is about 154 MMR wide and a game is worth roughly 25 to 30, so each star takes about five or six more wins than losses. A full medal, five stars, takes about 26 to 30 net wins. Divine stars are wider, so each one takes about seven or eight net wins.

Climb MMR needed Net wins at about 27 per game
One star (Herald to Ancient) about 154 about 6
One full medal (Herald to Ancient) about 770 about 29
One Divine star about 200 about 7 to 8
Divine 1 to Immortal about 800 to 1,000 about 30 to 37

Net wins are the honest way to plan. At a 55% win rate, every 20 games gives you about two net wins, so climbing a full medal is a few hundred games of steady play. A higher win rate shortens that dramatically, which is why fixing one weakness usually beats grinding more games.

Requirements to play ranked

Before your account can queue ranked at all, it needs:

  1. A unique phone number linked to your Steam account. A number removed from an account can't be reused on another one for three months.
  2. 100 hours played on the account.
  3. No low priority penalty. A player in low priority can't queue ranked, and neither can any party they are in. The Dota 2 low priority guide covers how to clear it.

Parties have a limit of their own: members whose ratings are too far apart can't queue ranked together.

Recalibration and seasons

Dota 2 no longer resets medals on a seasonal calendar. The last big reset came with patch 7.33 in 2023, when every account recalibrated under the new system. Since then, recalibration is optional: when it is offered, you can turn it on in the game's settings, which lowers your Rank Confidence so your next games move you further and faster.

Recalibrating is only worth it if you are sure you are better than your current medal. It works both ways: a bad run of games while confidence is low drops you just as fast.

How to climb faster

The ladder rewards consistency more than highlight plays. Four habits move MMR more than anything else:

  • Pick a small hero pool. Two or three heroes per position you queue for. You win more with heroes you understand than with whatever is strong this patch.
  • Win your lane more often. Most games below Ancient are decided by who comes out of the first ten minutes ahead. The Dota 2 laning guide covers last-hitting, trading and when to leave lane.
  • Stop playing after two losses in a row. Tilt is the most common reason a good week turns into a lost medal.
  • Never abandon. Abandons cost a loss, damage your behavior score and can land you in low priority, which locks ranked until you clear it.

If you want help with the climb itself, BoostingXP's Dota 2 MMR boost takes your account from its current medal to the one you choose, played by hand in normal ranked matchmaking, with your chosen position and server. A win boost secures a set number of ranked wins without a rating target, and a calibration boost plays the games that set a new or recalibrating account's rating. If you would rather improve your own play, hourly coaching on the professional play page covers replays and live games.

FAQ

What is the MMR range for each Dota 2 medal?

Herald covers about 0 to 769 MMR, and each medal up to Ancient covers the next 770, at about 154 per star. Divine starts at about 4,620 with stars about 200 wide, and Immortal starts around 5,420 to 5,620.

How much MMR do you get per win in Dota 2?

It depends on your Rank Confidence. On a settled account it is usually around 25 to 30 per game. New, returning and recalibrating accounts move more.

Does Dota 2 have separate Core and Support MMR?

No. Each account has a single MMR, whatever position you play.

Do Dota 2 medals decay?

No. Your medal doesn't drop from inactivity. Your Rank Confidence does, so your first games back move your rating more than usual.

What MMR is Immortal in Dota 2?

Immortal starts after Divine 5, at around 5,420 to 5,620 MMR depending on the source. Valve doesn't publish an exact line. Above 8,500 MMR, ranked games use Immortal Draft.

How do I see my MMR in Dota 2?

Open your profile's match history: your ranked rating is shown there next to your Rank Confidence.
